Good questions, honest answers

Is WhisPaste really free?
Yes. WhisPaste is open source under the MIT license. The app with offline transcription, Voice Snippets, history and more is free. You can download it from GitHub. The Microsoft Store version includes automatic updates and supports the project financially.
Does it actually work offline?
Fully. WhisPaste includes built-in speech recognition that runs entirely on your computer. No internet needed. If you want, you can also connect a cloud provider for even better accuracy, but that’s your choice, not a requirement.
How accurate is the transcription?
That depends on the model you pick. The small model handles everyday voice input well. Larger models are more precise but need more RAM and processing time. You can switch any time to find the right balance.
What are the system requirements?
Minimum: Windows 10 (64-bit) or macOS 10.15 Catalina + · 8 GB RAM (required, enforced at startup) · 1––2 GB free disk space. No GPU required. WhisPaste always falls back to CPU, and the Parakeet engine is CPU-only by design and still several times faster than Whisper on CPU. Recommended (Whisper engine): 16 GB RAM · dedicated GPU with 2––4 GB VRAM (Vulkan on Windows and Linux, Metal on Apple Silicon) for 5 × faster transcription. GPU VRAM by model: compact ~900 MB · balanced ~1.5 GB · premium (turbo) ~2.6 GB. Apple Silicon: unified memory counts for both CPU and GPU, so 8 GB covers the balanced model.
Which languages are supported?
With the Whisper engine, WhisPaste supports 99 languages, from English and German to Japanese, Arabic, and Hindi. The Parakeet engine trades that breadth for raw CPU speed, covering about 25 languages. You can switch languages (and engines) any time in settings, or let WhisPaste auto-detect what you're speaking.
Whisper or Parakeet: which local engine should I use?
WhisPaste ships two on-device speech engines. Whisper (whisper.cpp) is the all-rounder: 99 languages, GPU-accelerated, and very accurate. Parakeet (NVIDIA Parakeet TDT via sherpa-onnx) trades language breadth (about 25 languages) for raw speed: several times faster than Whisper on plain CPU, no GPU needed. Both run fully offline. Pick Whisper for maximum language coverage, Parakeet when speed on modest hardware matters most. Switch any time in Settings → Speech-to-Text.
Is my voice data safe?
Your audio never leaves your machine in local mode. If you use the cloud path, recordings go directly from your device to the provider you selected. WhisPaste does not proxy or store them. Anonymous usage statistics and crash reports are aggregate, never carry your audio or text, and can be turned off any time in Settings → Privacy.
Is WhisPaste available on Mac or Linux?
WhisPaste ships ready-to-run installers for Windows, macOS, and Linux (AppImage or .deb, no install step). Building from source is also available on Linux if you prefer it. See the Download page.
Why does Windows show a warning when I download?
Microsoft SmartScreen warns about any new software that hasn't built download reputation yet. It doesn't mean the app is unsafe. WhisPaste is open source, and every release is built transparently through GitHub Actions. Click "More info" → "Run anyway" to proceed.
Why does macOS warn that WhisPaste can’t be verified?
macOS Gatekeeper blocks unrecognised apps downloaded outside the App Store. WhisPaste is not yet notarized by Apple. Right-click the app → “Open” → confirm in the dialog to proceed.
